How To Build A Bench Seat

There are several kinds of bench seats that can be made. If you have basic woodworking experience, you can do this yourself. But do take the time to read the instructions carefully. Here are a few simple instructions on how to make a bench seat.

Requirements

1.    Good quality wood- choose at least 2x6s of a good wood
2.    Circular saw or a hand saw
3.    Screws
4.    Pliers
5.    Nails
6.    Sanders and sandpaper
7.    Paint and polyurethane
8.    Measuring tape
9.    Hammer

Instructions

1.    Trawl the internet to find the right design that you are looking for. There are many kinds of bench seats that are present on the internet. A few sites will also offer you free plans on how to make them the right way. For example, you can check the www.doityourself.com for detailed step by step instructions.

2.    Choose your material according to the design that you have selected. We have specified Douglas fir wood for outdoor benches but you can use any kinds that you are looking for. Bathroom benches can be set up with plastic, resin or ceramic tiles.

3.    Measure the location properly. Remember the old adage; measure twice cut once. Once you have the measurements at hand you can modify the free bench plan to produce a design according to your requirements

4.    For a basic design, cut the seat parts in to 6 foot lengths of three parts. Each piece has to be sanded and prepared for the final polish. Make sure that you take care of the corners too.

5.    Prepare three cleats for placement underneath the bench seat. Most benches are usually 20 inches in width. Attach the cleats according to the plan that downloaded from the internet. Use galvanized screws to attach the seat to the planks. Three screws provide the best kind of attachment.

6.    Ensure that the leg is about 18 inches long and is attached to the base of the bench. Brace each leg to the bench with a 45-degree angle to prevent slippage and the put in a straight 2x4 between the legs.

7.    Ensure that you sand every part of the bench to get the best fit. You can simply leave the bench as is to get a rustic look or paint the bench with polyurethane finish to make it more hard and resistant to the weather.
